Beauty Beyond Your 20’s

The Six Best Ways to Refresh Your Beauty Routine as You Age

Blonde woman with beautiful skin.

It’s funny how we update our style, our homes, and even our fragrance as we move from our 20’s to our 30’s and 40’s, but somehow we think we can use the same shampoo, conditioner, skincare, and makeup throughout the decades. Hard stop, my friends. Just as your life evolves over the years, your beauty routine should as well. Here are a few quick pointers for refreshing your beauty game:

Hair Care Updates

As you age, your hair changes. It loses its natural shine, you’re probably seeing grey hairs and coloring your hair more often, it can get dry easily, and you might even notice it’s not as thick as it once was. This is all normal, but with a few changes to your routine, you can slow down the changes you see in your hair.

Shampoo + Conditioner

ONE.

Do your research and find the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found I need more moisture and started doing a weekly hair mask like this one from Vernon François.

TWO.

Shampoo less often and use dry shampoo to refresh. Washing your hair is damaging.

THREE.

Get frequent gloss treatments to keep the shine.

Skincare Updates

This could be its own entire blog. As you age, your skin changes. We all know this. Again, do your research for your unique skin considerations, but here are a few starting points.

Sun Damage

FOUR.

Whatever you do to your face, do it to your neck and chest as well. Treat it all as the same skin. Your 30’s and 40’s are when you start seeing the effects of sun damage. There are some amazing products out now that are formulated just for your neck and chest like this one from Perricone MD.

Texture

FIVE.

Retinol can help your skin maintain its texture and “plump” look as you age. This might be the time to add some retinol products like this one from Sunday Riley into your routine.

Day vs. Night

SIX.

In your 30’s and beyond, you want to have different skincare routines for daytime vs. nighttime. Daytime is all about protection from the UV rays and environmental damage, and night is all about regeneration and treatment

You’ll notice other changes as you age, including how your body responds to certain foods, how your skin reacts to some chemicals, and how your hair takes color. Your body is a living, breathing organism, and it changes every year. Your job is to listen to what it’s telling you, do your homework (the best new products and brands are coming to market every day), and adjust along the way. You’re gorgeous at any age.
