The Eyes Have It: Best Practices for Daily Under Eye Care

It can feel overwhelming when it comes to eye creams and under-eye care – I'm here to help.

If you ever want to take a temperature check on your sleep, diet, hydration, and just about every indicator of health…just look down. Not too far down – just under your eyes. See that? 😉 If you’re anything like me, you might see wrinkles, dry skin, and discoloration. That delicate skin is no joke! It’s is a mirror to every layer of your wellness. And winter doesn’t help. The dry, cold air, and harsh elements…yikes!

All is not lost. The good news is that beauty brands see this need for daily under-eye care and have come to the rescue. Not only are they coming out with more and better eye creams, but they’re also unveiling incredible eye masks that take hydration to a new level. It can feel overwhelming when it comes to eye creams and under-eye care – I’m here to help. This is my list of eye care tips, products, and best practices to keep those peepers looking perky and smooth!

Nighttime Routine for Under-Eye Care

Step 1. Prevent premature fine lines and wrinkles with a gentle eye makeup remover.

Step 1. Prevent premature fine lines and wrinkles with a gentle eye makeup remover.

It starts with makeup removal: eye makeup is hard to remove, and you need to do it right. I love micellar water for this. It’s gentle and makes eye makeup removal a breeze. Because it’s mild, you can go easy on your under-eyes and spare your delicate skin the pulling and rubbing.

Step 2. Soothe your eye area with a nourishing mask that hydrates and brightens while it firms.

Okay, now you have a clean face, but don’t lather on your products just yet — Head into the kitchen where you keep your eye masks in the fridge (yes!). I love to pop on chilled eye masks for 10-15 minutes while I finish tidying up the house for the night or answer one last email. The reason I do my masks before my product is that I want the eye mask serum to have direct contact with my skin, and if I have a product on my face, the eye masks slip down.

Step 3. Apply your eye cream, BEFORE your face serum and moisturizer.

Ahhh. Your eyes already feel brighter, right? Okay, now you can add your eye cream. I like to do eye cream first, then my face serum and moisturizer. The reason I do eye cream first is that I want the most potent product the closest to my skin.

When it comes to mornings, I also love using my eye masks for a quick lift. Pop them on in the morning (no need to wash your face it should be clean from the night prior, you can splash some warm water on it). Then go ahead with your typical daytime skincare routine. If you get into a habit of treating yourself to chilled eye masks once or twice a day, you will see smoother and more moisturized skin. And who doesn’t love a little treat?

But it’s not just your eyes that are looking for to be brightened and firmed. Over the past few months, I have noticed a drastic change in my skin. I am pretty sure I have hit a hormonal hill … Ugh. My face has gone from soft and dewy to rough and dry. Maybe it’s not hormones. Maybe it’s my environment or diet? I’m on a mission to sort it!
